General Description

 

Methylene blue, CI 52015 is a aromatic chemical (Heterocyclic) and has molecular formula C16H18N3SCl. It has many applications such as an Active Pharmacutical Ingredient (API), Biological Stain, Laboratory Reagent, etc. At room temperature it appears as a solid, odorless, dark green powder. It yields a blue solution when it is dissolved in water. The hydrated form of Methylene Blue has 3 molecules of water per molecule of methylene blue.

Synthesis of Methylene Blue:

 

Methylene Blue is industrially synthesized from N,N Dimethylaniline by converting N,N Dimethylaniline to p-Aminodimethylaniline and further reacting p-Aminodimethylaniline with N,N Dimethylaniline in presence of strong oxidizing agents like MnO2 and Sodium Dichromate to for Thiosulfonic Acid of Bindschedler’s Green and with further oxidation to Methylene Blue. Methylene Blue is mostly produced in form of Zinc Chloride double salt for higher yields.

 

 

Uses of Methylene Blue

 

 

Aquaculture

 

Methylene blue is used in aquaculture as a treatment for fungal infections. It is also effective in treating fish infected with ich, the parasitic protozoaIchthyophthirius multifiliis. It is used to protect newly laid fish eggs from getting infected by fungus or bacteria. Methylene Blue is found to be very effective when used as part of a "medicated fish bath" for treatment of ammonia, nitrite, and cyanide poisoning.

 

Methemoglobinemia

 

At pharmacological doses, Methylene Blue has got Reducing agent properties. For this reason it is used as a medication in treatment for Methemoglobinemia. Methemoglobinemia can arise from ingestion of certain pharmaceuticals & toxins.

 

 

Biological Stain

 

Methylene Blue is used as a biological stain in endoscopic polypectomy. Methylene Blue is also used as a dye in chromoendoscopy. Methylene Blue is present in widely used biological stains such as Giemsa Stain.

 

 

 

Malaria

 

Methylene Blue is proven to be effective in treatment of Malaria. It was widely used in 1890s for treatment of Malaria but was abandoned due to some side effects. New combination drugs containing Methylene Blue are under research and clinical trials for treatment of Malaria.
